VPN and Remote Desktop at Home Guide (Apple at Home to Apple at Work)
User Guide for connecting Apple computers from outside to an Apple computer on the campus network.
Install the VPN client (PaloAlto GlobalProtect) on your PC
Open the web browser and type in the following website in the address bar: https://gpvpn.qc.cuny.edu
Input just your QC username (Ex. JSmith) and password to login for downloading the client installation file
Click on the corresponding link to download the VPN client installation file: “Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent” for Mac computer
(GlobalProtect.pkg)
Click on the Downloads folder in the dock to see the downloaded package. Install the package.
Select “GlobalProtect”, DO NOT select “Uninstall GlobalProtect”. Click “Continue”
Keep all the default settings, click “Install” to start the installation.
Remarks: The installation requires administrator privilege. This is a local administrator for your computer, and is not QC username and password.
Close the dialogue windows after the installation completed, and close the browser.
Login and Connect the VPN client (PaloAlto GlobalProtect) on your Mac
(The VPN agent can be found under “Applications” and small globe icon on the top menu bar)
Input the portal address “gpvpn.qc.cuny.edu”, and click “Connect”
When prompt, input just your QC username (Ex. JSmith) and password for authentication
After successfully authenticated, the Apple Computer is now connected remotely to QC network via VPN
Download VNC and connect to your work computer.
In the browser of your choice, enter http://bit.ly/QCVNCMAC. It will take you to the download page for the Apple version of VNC Connect Client.
Click the blue button in the middle of the screen labelled Download VNC Viewer
You may have to allow downloads before the download begins.
When the download completes, open the Download folder, and click on the file downloaded.
In the window that opens, drag the VNC icon into the Applications folder.
Double click on the Applications folder.
Double click on the VNC Viewer Icon.
A dialog box will appear asking “VNC Viewer” is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Click Open.
The EULA will then appear. Click the check box, and then click OK.
The Get started with VNC Viewer screen will appear. Click GOT IT.
At the top of the VNC screen, enter your work’s computer name and press Enter.
You will be prompted for the password that you set on your work computer during the setup.
Logout / Sign out VPN connection
To logout, click on the GlobalProtect icon, then click the setting icon , click “Disable”
To re-login again, just click “Enable”, then you will be prompted to login again (username preserved)
To sign out VPN completely, click on the GlobalProtect icon, then click the setting icon , click “Settings”
Then click “Sign Out”
Confirm the dialogue to sign out completely
Remarks: Remember to disconnect the VPN connection before logging off, shutting down or restarting the computer.
